Cleaning the Engine Bay

Why should you clean the engine compartment? Rust prevention, early oil/fluid leak detection, early belt wear detection and cosmetics are among the prime reasons.

Cleaning the Engine Bay

To soften the grease and grunge collected on your engine compartment, start the engine, let it warm up for a few minutes and shut it off. The proper cleaning temperature of the engine is warm but not hot. If you can just hold your hand to the engine without burning it, then it is warm enough to clean.

Before you start washing the engine make sure you cover any electrics. If you don't you risk getting sensitive parts of the engine wet resulting in being unable to start the engine or electric failure. If you decide to wash the engine you must use a good engine degreaser covering the engine, including the rims. After leaving it a few minutes to settle you can rinse it off afterwards. It is not recommended to wash a car engine if it has an electronic management system, because if water is allowed to get into the sensors around the engine it will give false readings to the onboard computer.
